Tao Te Ching, by Lao Tzu

Chapter 14



"Look for It, you won't see It: It is called 'fleeting'.
Listen for It, you won't hear It: It is called 'thin'. 
Grasp at It, You can't get It: It is called 'subtle'.

These three lines
       are about something that evades scrutiny.
Yes, in it everything blends and becomes one.


Its top is not bright
Its underside is not dim.
Always unnameable, It turns back to nothingness. 
This is the shape of something shapeless
The form of a nothing
this is elusive and evasive.
 

Encountering It, you won't see the front
Following It, you won't see Its back.


Keep to the Tao of the ancients
And so manage things happening today.

The ability to know the ancient sources,
this is the main thread of Tao."

"When you're sitting, trying to get in touch with the Softness, the One important thing, it evades your grasp─like a spirit that appears here, then there, then is gone.  You think you see it, then it recedes into nothing.  This is the only way to describe the presence that is formless.  But in this practice we achieve a oneness.  And we come in contact with the deep sources of all things, the ancient sources that enable us to handle whatever comes to us today."  ...  "I take "know the ancient sources" of things to mean gaining an intuitive understanding of the deep truth about affairs.  (As often, "ancient" serves to express what we more commonly express by images of "depth" or "Origin."  (Note that here Tao is not the name of the ancient source that one knows, but of the practice by which one comes to know it.)  It seems very unlikely that "these three" refers to the three different things mentioned [i.e., seeing, listening, grasping] which "become one."  It makes more sense to suppose that "these three" refers to the three line saying, which is about a presence or mental quality incapable of being grasped through close mental scrutiny.  in this mental space everything is Merged, "blends and becomes one."  This observation is a partial basis for my solution to the puzzle about the meaning of Chapter 1, reading literally "these two, merged."  That is, it refers to the previous two-line saying in Chapter 1, which is (partly) about the state of "not desiring," which identifies with a mentally Still state called t'ung/"The Merging.""

Complexity is Closer to the Truth

 

In my experience, life is rightly characterized as diverse, complicated, varied, rich in multiplicity, saturated with the 'ten thousand things.'  Personally, I find little need to seek or to find or to have the "experience of unity."  This state of "unification," when actualized, is in most cases rather fleeting.  It may be profound, but no more so that the beauty of complexity and the fascinating reality of diversity.  I do not find the experience of the multiplicity of things distressing, disturbing, or disheartening.  

Just because all of the eggs today are in one basket does not make the colored basket more real or more interesting or more valuable than the eggs.  

Ignoring the facticity of the complexity of the natural and mental realms seems to me a more serious ignorance, not very sensible, and ultimately unwise.  I long ago gave up on any quest for "enlightenment" (in Hindu or Buddhist terms) and prefer the ordinary state of mind grounded in a world that is not simple, not one, not unified, complex, and rich in details.  To claim that our normal experience of complexity and variety is an "illusion" or "ignorance (avidya) seems to me a form of incorrect judgment.  

No doubt, trying to simplify one's life has its benefits, reducing sensory overload can reduce stress, and not becoming overly infatuated with novelty can be helpful; but, pushing on this strange path towards the "enlightenment" or "realization" of a pure and uncluttered "Unity" can produce its own distressing and disturbing predicaments for a person.  

Many philosophers, ancient and modern, have made a sharp distinction between appearances and Reality, the many and the One, the phenomena and the Noumena, and multiplicity and Unity.  For me, it is muddled thinking to call all of our experiences "just fleeting illusions" and fabricate a true realm of being outside of our personal and social and practical experiences.  Indeed, we can't "see" in any ordinary sense of "see," the cells, molecules, atoms, and the subatomic particles that constitute the objects of our macro-cosmic world; but, this in no way means the multiplicity of objects in our ordinary environment are in any way "illusions."  The meaning of "objects" is much more complicated, varied in linguistic usage, and functional in many practical contexts.  Again, complexity is closer to the truth.

It is Time to Go


I saw Master Chang San-Feng
Enter the Sidhe, Fairies by his side,
Crossing over the pond at dawn.
Astonished I was!
On the teahouse table by the pond I later found
Some of his neatly printed notes
Folded in a well worn tome 
Of the Tao Te Ching, in Chapter 14.

He had written:
Even for an Immortal, the Past is the Key.

The Future
Grasp at it, but you can’t get it,
Colorless as an invisible crystal web,
Unformed, thin, a conundrum of ideas,
The Grand White Cloud Temple of Possibilities,
Flimsy as a maybe, strong as our hopes,
Silent as eternal Space.
When you meet it, you can’t see its face.
You want to stand for it, but cannot find a place.

The Present
It appears and disappears through the moving ten thousand things,
Quick as a wink, elusive as a hummingbird,
Always Now with no other choice,
Moving ground, unstable Plates,
Real as much as Real gets to Be,
This Day has finally come,
Room for something, for the moment, waits
Gone in a flash, assigned a date,
Gulp, swallowed by the future.
Unceasing, continuous, entering and leaving
The vast empty center of the Elixir Field.

The Past
Becoming obscurer, fading, falling apart,
A mess of memories in the matrix of brains;
Some of it written, fixed in ink, chiseled in stone,
Most of it long lost in graves of pure grey bones.
Following it you cannot see its back,
Only forms of the formless, stories, tales,
Images of imageless, fictions, myths.
A smattering of forever fixed facts,
Scattered about the homes of fading ghosts.    
The twists and turns of millions of tongues
Leaving us languages, our passports to the past.

The future becomes past, the present becomes past,
Every thing lives, subtracting but seconds for Nowness, in the Past. 
The Realms of the Gods, the kingdoms of men,
The Evolutionary Tree with roots a million years long
Intertwined with turtles, dragons, trees, stars and toads;
     crickets, coyotes, grasses, tigers, bears, monkeys and men. 

These profoundest Three of Time
An unraveled red Knot of Mystery,
Evading scrutiny in the darkness of days
Eluding capture in the brightness of nights,
In beginnings and endings are only One, the Tao,
Coming from Nowhere, Returning to Nothing. 

What dimension of Time
Does your mind dwell within?
Future, Present or Past
Where is your homeland? 

The Past holds the accomplishments, the created, the glories, and the Great.
The Present is but a thin coat of ice on the Pond of Fate. 
The Future is an illusion, a guess, a plethora of possible states.

Recreate the Past
By playing within the Present. 
Twisting and reeling one’s silky reality
From the Black Cocoons of the Acts
From which we create our Pasts.
Follow the Ancient Ways.    
The Past is the Key.

Time is something everyone runs short on and finally runs out of.
The mill of the mind grinds time into memories.
Gardeners turn into the soil their lifetime.
Time may wait for no man, but seems to muddle and poke along quite slowly for gardeners.

Winter does not turn into Summer; ash does not turn into firewood - on the chopping block of time.
In an instant there is nothing - Time produces Nature.
Time will tell, but we often fail to listen.
Gardeners learn to live in worm time, bee time, and seed time.
Things always go downhill, fall apart, wear out  ... the arrow of Time pierces everything.
Time prevents too much from happening at once.
Time is rooted in Place.

“Hovering in the Present Time, Present Place,
Caught between the Real and the Imagined,
Cut off from the Past and Future,
Dangling in the Present!
 
Splitting up the Firewood of Dichotomies:
 
Objective/subjective, Tool/word, Scientific/literary,
God/man, Noumena/phenomena, Real/imagined,
Non-Fiction/fiction, Something/nothing, Many/one,
Things/ideas, Substance/attributes, Truth/falsity,
Multiplicity/singularity, Right/wrong, Clear/muddy,
Balanced/unstable, Woman/Man, Day/night,
Factual/fanciful, Interesting/dull, Creative/repetitive,
Temporary/permanent, Yin/Yang, Beauty/ugliness,
Opposites/sameness, Flourishing/failing, 
Practical/theoretical, Actual/possible, Logical/confusing.
 

Plenty of kindling for the fireplace.

These ideas fired up my thinking for many decades.
Dualistic thinking is great kindling for temporary flickers of insight.
Dualistic thinking is fun and pleasurable, naysayers ignored.
Dualistic thinking helps solve some real life problems.
Occasionally, Not Thinking is also quite a useful activity.
Sleeping gives me plenty of my zazen Not Thinking time."

I need to cut up and split up some firewood in my yard today.
Firewood, Fireplace, Fire, Ashes: Time/Uji Dogen.
We enjoy connecting and disconnecting two things: literally and metaphorically.
Two or Three are as delightful as One.
Sleeping = Zazen Dropping Off Body and Mind, Calm, Settled

Walking on this Beautiful Planet

"Walking meditation means to enjoy walking without any intention to arrive. We don't need to arrive anywhere.  We just walk. We enjoy walking. That means walking is already stopping, and that needs some training.  Usually in our daily life we walk because we want to go somewhere. Walking is only a means to an end, and that is why we do not enjoy every step we take. Walking meditation is different. Walking is only for walking. You enjoy every step you take. So this is a kind of revolution in walking. You allow yourself to enjoy every step you take.
The Zen master Ling Chi said that the miracle is not to walk on burning charcoal or in the thin air or on the water; the miracle is just to walk on earth. You breathe in. You become aware of the fact that you are alive. You are still alive and you are walking on this beautiful planet. That is already performing a miracle. The greatest of all miracles is to be alive. We have to awaken ourselves to the truth that we are here, alive. We are here making steps on this beautiful planet. This is already performing a miracle.  But we have to be here in order for the miracle to be possible. We have to bring ourselves back to the here and the now."

Standing in the Sensuous Present

    "There is a useful exercise that I devised to keep myself from falling completely into the civilized oblivion of linear time.  You are welcome to try it the next time you are out of doors.  I locate myself in a relatively open space─ a low hill is particularly good, or a wide field.  I relax at bit, take a few breaths, gaze around.  Then I close my eyes, and let myself begin to feel the whole bulk of my past─the whole mass of events leading up to this very moment.  And I call into awareness, as well, my whole future─all those projects and possibilities that lie waiting to be realized.  I imagine this past and this future as two vast balloons of time, separated from each other like the bulbs of an hourglass, yet linked together at the single moment where I stand pondering them.  And then, very slowly, I allow both of these immense bulbs of time to begin leaking their substance into this minute movement between them, into the present.  Slowly, imperceptibly at first, the present moment begins to grow.  Nourished by the leakage from the past and the future, the present moment swells in proportion as those other dimensions shrink.  Soon it is very large; and the past and future have dwindled down to mere knots on the edge of this huge expanse.  At this point I let the past and future dissolve entirely.  And, I open my eyes.  ...

    I find myself standing in the midst of an eternity, a vast and inexhaustible present.  The whole world rests within itself─the trees at the fields edge, the hum of crickets in the grass, cirrocumulus clouds rippling like wave across the sky, from horizon to horizon. ...
