Common Ground

 

"With a cultured of mistrust, how do we create community?  How do we find common ground?
Common ground.
Perhaps that is the place to start.  No matter what we think of one another's religious beliefs or practices, we do all stand on the same ground.  
We share the same earth.  The same sun rises and sets on all of us.  Doesn't this transcend our doctrinal differences?

Millennia ago, early people's personified the sun and earth─ made deities of them, worshipped them.  Our modern scientific understanding of natural phenomenon makes it unreasonable for us to do that.  But surely we can share their reverence.  Surely we can follow their example of respect for the earth, the air, the water─ and be healthier and happier for it.

    If there is a theme that runs through the history of rituals related to the earth's seasons, it is renewal.  The wheel turns and the old season gives way to the new, the old year to the new, the old life to the new.  Each planting of seeds promises new possibilities.  Each harvest brings sustenance for yet another year.  each fallow time regenerates the life of the soil.  The sun deities retreat and return.  The grain goddesses are lost and restored.  The vegetation gods die and rise again.  The cycle of life goes on and on, birth after death after birth.  Perhaps what all the rituals celebrate is this continuity of life, the miraculous natural world that makes it possible, and our abiding connection to it."

Ghost Town Open Mic Poetry Reading in Vancouver WA






Featuring Janis Harrington and Victor Griggs. Many other local authors read their poems. The Open Mic session went from 7 pm to 10 pm. A diverse crowd of listeners and readers.

I thoroughly enjoyed the last three Open Mic events in our Vancouver downtown. Listening to live readings and meeting poets has greatly expanded my understanding in many positive ways. I could hardly sleep last night after these profound experiences. Some of the readings brought tears to my eyes.

Reading out load to an audience is a Performance Art, an Acting Art! I need to improve my skills in this area.

I purchased a book by Janis Harrington. I was able to talk with her before the event began. A classy lady with a sharp mind! Her poem about being a girl in a Catholic School brought back many memories of mind; because, I attended Catholic School classrooms in grades 1st to 12th.

Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, Chapter 54

"He who is well established in Tao cannot be pulled away.
He who has a firm grasp of Tao cannot be separated from it.
Thus from generation to generation his ancestral sacrifice will never be suspended.
When one cultivates virtue in his person, it becomes genuine virtue.
When one cultivates virtue in his family, it becomes overflowing virtue.
When one cultivates virtue in his community, it becomes lasting virtue.
When one cultivates virtue in his country, it becomes abundant virtue.
When one cultivates virtue in the world, it becomes universal.
Therefore the person should be viewed as a person.
The family should be viewed as a family.
The community should be viewed as a community.
The country should be viewed as a country.
And the world should be viewed as the world.
How do I know this to be the case in the world?

Thinking like Alfred North Whitehead

 Some Principles of Alfred North Whitehead's Thinking

1. Question the assumptions of your community, your society, your religion, your science, your educational institutions, especially those that are rarely mentioned.
2. Question the dominant media, asking who controls it and what they want you to think.
3. Recognize that a serious answer to any important question brings into view lots of other questions.
4. When people appeal to mystery, consider that it may be mystification.  Push critical thought as far as you can.
5.  Recognize that the wider range of influences on an event or person that you consider, the better you understand that event or person.
6.  Recognize that the broader you consideration of the context and of the likely consequences of your action, the better chance that you will make the right choice.
7.  Realize that all your ideas and values are influenced by your particular situation, but refuse to conclude that for this reason they can be dismissed as merely "relative."
8.  Recognize that there may be no actions that are completely harmless, but do not let that prevent you for acting decisively.
9.  Understand that compassion is the most basic aspect of our experience, and seek to liberate and extend your compassion to all with which you come in contact.
10. Deepen you commitments to your own immediate communities, but always remember that other communities make similar demands on their members.  Let you ultimate commitment be all-inclusive."

Dao De Jing, Chapter 78

Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu
Chapter 78

"Nothing in the world is weaker than water
but against the hard and the strong nothing excels it
for nothing can change it
the soft overcomes the hard
the weak overcomes the strong
this is something everyone knows but no one is able to practice
thus the sage declares who accepts a country's disgrace we call the lord of soil and grain
who accepts a country's misfortune we call king of all under Heaven
upright words sound upside down"

"Heaven below (the sacred body) is not as soft and yielding as water, yet can take on the rigid and violent.
Without its (the sacred body's) ability to overcome the rigid and the violent, it is nothing.
It replaces violence with gentleness.
It overcomes violence.
Tenderly it overcomes the unyielding.
Without knowing this, no one in Heaven below can progress.
The sages speak of guarding the community:
Dishonor comes from making sacrifices to the gods.
Preserve the community, not its omens.
It is correct to speak of Heaven below as what connects Heaven,
Humanity and Earth.

"You want a small state with a minimal population.

Have ready to hand weaponry for a sufficient number of military units
Yet have no recourse to use them.

Make sure that the common people take dying seriously
So that they have no taste for venturing far from home.

Though you have ships and chariots enough
Have no reason to man them;
Though you have armor and weapons enough
Have no reason to parade them.

Bring the common people back to keeping their records with knotted stong,
To relishing their food,
To finding beauty in their garments,
To enjoying their customs,
An to finding security in their homes.

Although your neighboring states are within eyesight
And the sounds of their dogs and cocks are within earshot,
Your people will grow old and die without having anything to do with them."

Tu Li


A state should be small in size and population.
It should teach the people not to use arms,
Even though arms may be found in abundance.
It should teach the people
To view death as a serious matter,

There is no occasion to stage public reviews.
The people are taught -
To resume the practice of tying knots;

"The ideal state is a small intimate community.
Where all the necessities of life are present in abundance.

Business transactions are simple enough to be calculated on one's fingers rather  than requiring complicated bookkeeping.

A typical webpage created by Mike Garofalo for each one of the 81 Chapters (Verses, Sections) of the Tao Te Ching (Daodejing) by Lao Tzu (Laozi) includes 25 different English language translations or interpolations for that Chapter, 5 Spanish language translations for that Chapter, the Chinese characters for that Chapter, the Wade-Giles and Hanyu Pinyin transliterations (Romanization) of the Mandarin Chinese words for that Chapter, and 2 German and 1 French translation of that Chapter.  Each webpage for each one of the 81 Chapters of the Tao Te Ching includes extensive indexing by key words, phrases, and terms for that Chapter in English, Spanish, and the Wade-Giles Romanization.  Each webpage on a Chapter of the Daodejing includes recommended reading in books and websites, a detailed bibliography, some commentary, research leads, translation sources, a Google Translate drop down menu, and other resources for that Chapter.  These are hypertext documents, and available online under Creative Commons 4.
