Birthday for Michael P. Garofalo

Today is my 79th birthday.

My parents were Bertha June (1921-1994) and Michael James Garofalo (1916-1997).  My two brothers were Paul and Phillip.

My parents and I in 1947

I grew up in East Los Angeles and attended St. Alphonsus Catholic Grammar School, Cantwell Catholic High School (Honors Diploma), California State University at Los Angeles (B.A. Philosophy), and the University of Southern California (M.S. Library Science).

I worked for the City of Commerce Public Library System from 1963-1969.

Blanche Karen Eubanks and I were married in 1967.  We we celebrate our 54 wedding anniversary this week in 2021.

Karen and I in 1970
Biloxi, Mississippi

Served in the United States Air Force, Air Training Command, from 1969-1973.  Honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

I worked for the County of Los Angeles Public Library System from 1974 to 1998.  I retired as a Library Administrator, and Regional Administrator for the East Region in the San Gabriel Valley.  I worked at offices in the Compton library, Bell Gardens library, East Los Angeles library, Norwalk library, Huntington Park library, and West Covina library.

We lived in Bell Gardens and Hacienda Heights - both in the East Los Angeles  metropolitan area.

Karen and I, and our families and community, raised two children, Alicia June and Michael Delmer.  We now have two grandchildren, Katelyn and Makenna.

I started creating websites in 1995, and a blog in 2005.

Karen and I lived in Red Bluff, North Sacramento Valley, California, from 1998-2017, in a rural area on a five acre parcel.  We both worked part-time for school districts.  I was the Technology and Media Service Supervisor and District Librarian for the Corning Union Elementary School District; and Karen was a Special Education Instructional Aide.

Mike retired on July 1, 2016, after working part-time since 1998 as the Technology and Media Services Supervisor for the Corning Union Elementary School District in Corning, California.

I taught yoga, taijiquan, qigong, pilates, and other fitness classes at the Tehama Family Fitness Center in Red Bluff from 2002-2016.

In 2017, we moved to Vancouver, Washington.  We are now both retired.

I am very fortunate in having fairly good health, a positive attitude, and stamina for work and play for all of my long life.  I was fortunate in being able to be productively employed for 54 years, and earning good medical insurance for Karen and I.

I am a philosopher by inclination and practice.  My biography.

I have been active with various sports, physical conditioning programs, weightlifting, walking, fitness, Taijiquan, Yoga, hiking, etc., during my entire healthy long life.

I am hoping that 2021 brings an end to the pandemic, work for all, and peace.

That about sums it up!

COVID Flu Setback in January 2024

I have been seriously ill from the COVID flu since January 2, 2024.

I hope to recover and return to blogging around January 30, 2024.

Please excuse my previous three posts made in error.  I have deleted them.  My illness and brain fog led to the mistake.

Goals for the Summer and Autumn of 2023

I am determined to sit far less and move more often this summer and autumn.

More emphasis upon taijiquan, yoga, walking, gardening, home chores, giving things away, self-care, etc.

Less emphasis upon sitting and watching television, I've watched television less than 30 minutes each day since April 2023.

Less emphasis upon sitting and overloading on information from the Internet.  Keep it under 30 minutes each day.  Take a long break from posting to Facebook or this blog.

Resume my monthly four day camping trip to a Yurt at the Pacific seashore in Washington or Oregon.

As for reading: more emphasis on Stoicism and poetry.

Cryo-Balloon Ablation of My Heart

At 9:30 am this morning, at the Peace Health Hospital in Vancouver, a team led by Dr. Reese will perform a cryo-balloon catheter ablation of my heart.  We hope this will correct some of my current electrical heart problems.  This is a non-invasive procedure, is "relatively safe," and does help 60-80% of people who undergo the procedure.  Dr. Reese told me he thought I was a good candidate for using this procedure.

At age 77, I have been slowed down by shortness of breath, mild chest tightness, fatigue, and lightheadedness caused by paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.  My heart went into atrial fibrillation in May of 2022.

We shall see what happens in the next month to me as a result of this technical procedure.

Friday, 7 am, 2/3/2023

The procedure went smoothly.  AFib controlled.  Dr. Reese said it would take three months to feel fully back to "normal."  Little discomfort, and no pain.  Sutures in thighs healing OK thus far.  Feeling very good.  Alert and thinking all night with little sound sleep.  Moving 10-15 minutes at the end of one hour of sitting.  Moving slowly, carefully, gently.  No chest tightness.  No lightheadedness or dizziness.  Clear vision.

Cancelled February retreat to a yurt at Pacific Beach State Park in Washington.  My next retreat will come in April.  Waiting nearly 3 months to go on retreat.  Staying close to home until recovery comes.  Also, Karen has upcoming hip surgery on March 7th.

Saturday, 4 am, 2/4/2023

Still feeling pretty good.  No problems.  Sutures healing OK.  No chest pain or discomfort.  Don't get out of breath.  A few cases of blurred/odd visual disturbances - wavy edges.  Trying to sit for 1 hour and then get up and gently exercise for 20 minutes today: walking, treadmill, qigong, taijiquan, yoga stretches.

Before the ablation, I was in AFib frequently.  My heartbeat averaged 61 bpm when at rest.  Now my average heartbeats per minute is between 70-80 bpm at rest.

Sunday, Noon, 2/5/2023

A little punked today.  Did not sleep well again last night: too much thinking.  My legs are a little sore from lots of Taijiquan practice yesterday.  Truly, a day of complete resting for me.  Sutures healed and looking good.  Very little chest discomfort.  Somewhat anxious.  No exercise.  Read, relax, sit, nap.  Ate  up to my recommended limit of calories 1500/carbohydrates 150.

Monday, 2/6/2023,

Four days since the ablation procedure.  Slept 7 hours last night - excellent for me.  Feeling alert and ready to move.

Thursday, 2/9/2023

Met with James Mathey, Physician's Assistant, Peace Health Hospital today.  He ran an EKG and checked my pacemaker memory.  I am in normal heart rhythm with no AFib.  He checked my leg wounds.  In his assessment, overall, I am progressing well.  I return to be evaluated by him on March 6th.  I can ramp my walking up to 5,000 steps per day in the next 10 days.  No heavy workouts, sweating, or hard labor.

Sunday, 2/12/2023

Injured my right leg.  Limping and in pain.  Start recovery process.

Heart Problems

People in their late 70's are often dealing with some kind of heart or vascular problems.  I myself, at 77, have a pacemaker that does not let my heartbeat fall below 60 beats per minute to overcome Bradycardia.  I had the pacemaker inserted in 2017.  I have a stint in my LAD, inserted in 2018. At the start of 2023, I have disconcerting symptoms of Atrial Fibulation; weakness, shortness of breath, lightheadedness.  I have scheduled a cryo-ablation in 2023 to try correct AFib.

I consult with a variety of good physicians in Vancouver, at Peace Health Hospital Cardiology-Electrophysiology. I have confidence in their diagnosis and treatment recommendations.  I research the subject by reading AFib books and quality Afib articles online.  I take Eliquis to reduce stroke chances.

I try to follow all recommendations for good self-care.  Taking prescribed medicines, sleeping well, mild exercise, social relations, projects, careful eating, stress reduction, and not using recreational drugs.

I will try my best to stay positive, stay busy, keep a cheerful demeanor, and reassure others.  I have so much to be grateful for in my life!

Back to blogging and webpage projects - stay busy!

Happy Father's Day, Michael James Garofalo

My father was Michael James Garofalo.  He was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 10th, 1916.  He passed away on April 2, 1996.  He had been raised, educated, worked, raised his family of three children, built 3 houses, enjoyed traveling in the Southwest, prospered, retired and lived till he was 81 years of age in Los Angeles County.

My paternal grandfather, Anthony Garofalo (1881-1931), and his father Demetrio came to Los Angeles from a town in Sicily called Pino dei Greci.  They were in the LA fruit and produce transportation and wholesale business.  Since my grandfather Anthony died of cancer when my dad was 15, my dad never experienced an adult relationship with his father.

My father grew up in Los Angeles during the Great Depression of the 1930's and World War II.  He lived and worked during the economic boom years from 1950-1980 in Los Angeles County.

My mother, Bertha June Garofalo (1921-1994), and my dad were married in 1942.  He was then a University of Southern California student and civilian draftsman employed by the U. S. Army Air Corps.

My dad and I were born in the same hospital: The White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles.  We both attended The University of Southern California.

He worked his entire professional career for the Flour Corporation.  He retired in 1978 as the Chief Piping Engineer at Flour.  Flour designed and built oil refineries and chemical plants all around the world.

My dad's Flour office was near the corner of the Washington and Atlantic Blouveards, less than a half mile from our small home in Bandini, unincorporated East Los Angeles, just another ELA barrio adjacent to industrial, manafacturing, retail, railroads, and slaughterhouses.  This area later became the incorporated City of Commerce.

I worked for the City of Commerce Public Library from 1963-1969.  I was attending California State University at Los Angeles at the time, paid for by my dad.  My dad worked at Flour back then, and we were moving to the new house that my dad and my two brothers had built in Hacienda Heights.  I worked hard at the "Ranch" most weekends building the garage, house, pool, and landscaping from the age of 10 to 21.  My dad taught us the building trades.

My dad was a Catholic.  He paid for me to attend Catholic School at St. Alphonsus Grammer School (K-8) and Cantwell Catholic High School (9-12), both in East Los Angeles.  He supported the Catholic Church, its outlook on life, their schools, and their sacraments.  My mom was the quiet Lutheran, acting like a Catholic.

My dad was a Republican.  He was a professional engineer in a non-union workplace.  He would not be thought of by others as a progressive, liberal, or libertarian.  He liked the Moral Majority attitude.  A prim and proper attitude, hard working, clean cut, Catholic, bourgeois, conservative, mainstream, married ...  Ronald Reagan was his favorite President.

My dad was a savy investor, very hardworking, and frugal.  He left me with an inheritance that enabled me to move to Northern California in 1998.  I worked part-time from 1998-2017, and enjoyed life as an educator, fitness instructor, and semi-retired bohemian gentleman gardener on 5 acres in a rural area.

I can't say my Dad and I were good friends.  It was probably somewhat my own fault, but he frequently was, for me, not a likeable sort of fellow in some ways.  He tended towards an authoritarian and bossy manner.  We did not share the same opinions about many issues of our adjacent generations or about different outlooks on life.

I could always count on him for help and guidance, and tried to reciprocate in kind over our lifetimes.  I respected him in many ways.  I admired his accomplishments.  I thought of him as a strong, decent, hard working man.  I wished him well for him for 52 years.

He told me many times, "You are a good son."  He choose Karen and I as his caregivers and personal managers after he had a stroke in 1992 and my mom died of cancer in 1994; and, choose me as the Executor of his estate.  We honored all his last wishes.

We both enjoyed traveling in the Southwest from 1950-1993.  He took our family on many trips in the West from 1948-1966.  My dad and mom owned a Ford 350 truck and a 20" travel trailer.  He drove that rig across the USA and down to Mexico City.

So I tip my hat to my Dad, Big Mike, my Father, Michael James Garofalo, and my good memories.

Happy Birthday, Dad
