A Pragmatic Non-Religious Life

 Reasons for living one's life without religious interference.

1. Since religions have little scientific, technological, or practical daily life value, you just don't need to bother with them.  For examples: If you needed good medical advice about a proper lifestyle for coping with Type II diabetes, see a competent doctor; and the Bible is useless for this advice. I you needed information on repairing your bicycle chain, don't waste your time reading the Koran. I you want to know how to create and care for an orchard, the Bagjavagita would be useless.  If you wanted to learn a foreign language, reading the Book of Mormon would unnecessary. If you needed to improve you mathematical skills, consulting the Pranjaparamitra Sutra would be useless.

Religious works are filled with stories and fictional tales of ancient tribal peoples, just like some fictional literary works. They might be pleasant leisure diversions, but have little or no substantive practical value.

2. Don't waste your time going to religious services at a Church or Temple. You have heard all these theology stories in the past, read about them in childhood, and listened to preachers splitting theological hairs and repeating the same old stories over and over, year after year. Why use your limited time listening again and again to the same old sermons? It is a non-productive use of your limited leisure hours; like seeing the same old situation comedy over again, watching football games for hours on end, or watching the "News" on TV for many hours. Get off you butt, take a walk, or garden, or practice on your piano, or read a science book. Don't be a passive listener, a dolt in a pew, a dullar sponge of a mind. Free yourself from boring indoctrination by preachers and priests telling you what and how to think. Quietly laugh at their threats, and never return. Think of how many thousands of hours saved for worthy practical and enjoyable pursuits by just not attending any church or temple meetings. 

3. You don't have enough money to give to religious organizations that have little value in your personal, daily, and social life. Don't pay for religious tax free buildings, and put some more money on your own mortgage. Don't fatten the wallets of wealthy preachers and priests, invest your money, or help a friend or somebody struggling. Don't pay for religious pre-schools that indoctrinate little children with absurd ideas. Don't give money to religious institutions that want to control politics, make everyone follow their own lifestyle, advocate violence and hate towards peaceful people of other religious or ideologies. Financially helping hospitals, food banks, libraries, public schools, rest homes, the homeless, children's music programs and sports teams might be a few good alternatives for you expenditures. What would be more useful to your community, a new up-to-date hospital or another church building? Improve your own family home before giving any money to an old worn corner church with few members that have rather rigid opinions about how everyone should live their version of a "moral" and 'godly' life.

4. Don't bother arguing with religious people. They  have been indoctrinated since childhood in the habitual thinking of their parent's religion.  Such habits of thought are seldom changed by talking with non-religious persons. Just mentioning to them that you just don't find religion very useful or practical is enough on your part. Don't let them preach to you or try to convert you; tell them that you are just not interested. Save yourself the time and trouble. 

5. Be skeptical of anyone who acts like they know it all, possess the one truth, speaks with with an attitude of unquestioned absolute authority, and claims to know an invisible god's thoughts. Beware of preachers and priests with spiritual insights and opinions that cannot be questioned. Don't be fooled by "Mysteries" that surpass human understanding. Don't let dramatic and clever preaching get in the way of clear understanding and reasoning. Find other thinkers to read and listen to that have some humility, some practical ideas, some generous humanity, know about limits, and have some common sense.

6. Religious people can become fanatical, mean, and violent. History provides ample horrible evidence for this claim. Avoid and do not in any way support these people.

7. Religious hypocrites talk on an on about the terrible dangers of secularism, modernism, and consumerism. Yet they live just like everyone else in our modern society. Be suspicious of holier-than-thou hypocrites, and wealthy preachers railing against secularism.

8.  Beware of any religious organization that is male dominated, supports macho attitudes, denies women rights, has only male leaders and elders and speakers, keeps women in the back of the church, and encourages male domination over women. Half the population everywhere are women. Don't give your money or time to religious organizations that denigrate and subordinate women.  Such behavior is impractical, unfair, unkind, and spiritually limiting. Support equal education for women, women's rights, and support women in leadership roles in our community. 

9. Being Non-Religious does not mean being Anti-Religious. There are decent people with religious beliefs that you can share your life with. Tolerance, pluralism, compassion, and friendship are good to share with everyone. Yes, there are some extremist religious fanatics you should avoid, shun, and be cautious around. But don't let the bad apples ruin the apple harvest. It is best for us just to avoid and not participate with religious rituals, organizations, and believers rather than persecute and or harass them.  Let the few great writers and orators, like the New Atheists, present the articulate arguments against the negative impacts of religion.

10. Don't Ask, Don't Tell.  Keep your spiritual and philosophical opinions to yourself in daily life. In America, religious people might hamper your success in work and business or public service if they know about your non-religious views.  Speak in general humanistic ethical ways, and avoid references to religious views in your daily ordinary life. Be neutral.  Don't proselytize for non-religious views amongst your ordinary daily contacts with people. 

11. Lead by example.  Make your lifestyle and thinking a model for others seeking alternatives to religious indoctrination and authoritarianism and magical irrelevance. Positive Psychology and Secular Ethics: Good Reads

Lately, I have been reading for many hours each day as I recover and heal my knee from my fall last Sunday (10 Sep 2023).  Here are some of the better books I have read:


The Twelve Monotasks: Do One Thing at a Time, Do Everything Better.  By Thatcher Wine. Little Brown Spark, 2021, index, notes, 263 pages.  VSCL, Hardbound + FVRLibrary.

If you want good ideas, tips, techniques, exercises, and methods for enabling yourself to focus, concentrate, and fully engage yourself in specific tasks in your daily life then read: "The Twelve Monotasks: Do One Thing at a Time, Do Everything Better" by Thatcher Wine, 2021. He gives specific recommendations for "monotasking" in the areas of reading, walking, listening, sleeping, eating, travel, learning, teaching, playing, seeing, creating, and thinking. A fine book in positive psychology!


Secular Faith: How Culture Has Trumped Religion in American Politics.  By Mark A. Smith.  University of Chicago Press, 2015, index, notes, 287 pages. FVRLibrary.

A sociological and historical study about how the secular society in America has moved away from traditional religious anti-progressive and oppressive values regarding slavery, divorce, homosexuality, abortion, and women's rights.  A very good analysis and careful research into how the Christian religion supported slavery, rejected divorce, persecuted homosexuals, rejected birth control, and treated women unfairly and denied women rights; and how secular compromises changed our views and laws regarding these issues and practices in American society over the past three centuries. A respect for individual liberties, rights, and freedom are more popular in American secular culture in 2023. For example, despite the Moral Majority, Christian Coalition, and fundamentalist "family values" agendas in the ongoing Culture Wars; all States now have "no-fault" divorce options, and these religious groups these days place a low priority on trying to restrict or make divorce illegal or persecute divorcees, as they did in the past.


The Existentialist's Survival Guide;  How to Live Authentically in an Inauthentic Age. By Gordon Marino. Harper One, 2018, bibliography, notes, 260 pages. FVRLibrary.

A philosopher and librarian and boxer digs deeply into real life issues such as anxiety, depression, despair, death, authenticity, faith, morality, and love.  Strong on Kierkegaard and similar authors. Hope, courage, and honesty but little emphasis of facile happiness. Existentialism has a gloomy demeanor, and life can be very gloomy.


Being and Nothingness: An Essay in Phenomenological Ontology. By Jean-Paul Sartre.  Translated by Sarah Richmond.  Washington Square Press, 1943, 2018, bibliography, index, 853 pages.  VSCL, Paperback. 

This complicated, obtuse, lengthy, difficult, and noted book will take me four months to read and study.  I have read a number of essays and fictional books by Sartre, and studied him in college in 1964, but have never challenged myself to study his magnum opus until 2023.  I'm not sure if I am up to understanding his complex views in my old age, but I will try.

A Manifesto for Humanists

Humanist Manifesto 2000

I. Preamble.  Humanism is an ethical, scientific, and philosophical outlook that has changed the world. Its heritage traces back to the philosophers and poets of ancient Greece and Rome, Confucian China, and the Charvaka movement in classical India. Humanist artists, writers, scientists, and thinkers have been shaping the modern era for over half a millennium. Indeed, humanism and modernism have often seemed synonymous for humanist ideas and values express a renewed confidence in the power of human beings to solve their own problems and conquer uncharted frontiers.

II. Prospects for a Better Future. 
For the first time in human history we possess the means provided by science and technology to ameliorate the human condition, advance happiness and freedom, and enhance human life for all people on this planet.

III. Scientific Naturalism.  The unique message of humanism on the current world scene is its commitment to scientific naturalism. Most world views accepted today are spiritual, mystical, or theological in character. They have their origins in ancient pre-urban, nomadic, and agricultural societies of the past, not in the modern industrial or postindustrial global information culture that is emerging. Scientific naturalism enables human beings to construct a coherent world view disentangled from metaphysics or theology and based on the sciences.

IV. The Benefits of Technology. 
Humanists have consistently defended the beneficent values of scientific technology for human welfare. Philosophers from Francis Bacon to John Dewey have emphasized the increased power over nature that scientific knowledge affords and how it can contribute immeasurably to human advancement and happiness.

V. Ethics and Reason.  The realization of the highest ethical values is essential to the humanist outlook. We believe that growth of scientific knowledge will enable humans to make wiser choices. In this way there is no impenetrable wall between fact and value, is and ought. Using reason and cognition will better enable us to appraise our values in the light of evidence and by their consequences.

VI. A Universal Commitment to Humanity as a Whole.  The overriding need of the world community today is to develop a new Planetary Humanism—one that seeks to preserve human rights and enhance human freedom and dignity, but also emphasizes our commitment to humanity as a whole. The underlying ethical principle of Planetary Humanism is the need to respect the dignity and worth of all persons in the world community.

VII. A Planetary Bill of Rights and Responsibilities.  To fulfill our commitment to Planetary Humanism, we offer a Planetary Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, which embodies our planetary commitment to the well-being of humanity as a whole. It incorporates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but goes beyond it by offering some new provisions. Many independent countries have sought to implement these provisions within their own national borders. But there is a growing need for an explicit Planetary Bill of Rights and Responsibilities that applies to all members of the human species.

VIII. A New Global Agenda.  Many of the high ideals that emerged following the Second World War, and that found expression in such instruments as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, have waned through the world. If we are to influence the future of humankind, we will need to work increasingly with and through the new centers of power and influence to improve equity and stability, alleviate poverty, reduce conflict, and safeguard the environment.

IX. The Need for New Planetary Institutions.  The urgent question in the twenty-first century is whether humankind can develop global institutions to address these problems. Many of the best remedies are those adopted on the local, national, and regional level by voluntary, private, and public efforts. One strategy is to seek solutions through free-market initiatives; another is to use international voluntary foundations and organizations for educational and social development. We believe, however, that there remains a need to develop new global institutions that will deal with the problems directly and will focus on the needs of humanity as a whole. These include the call for a bicameral legislature in the United Nations, with a World Parliament elected by the people, an income tax to help the underdeveloped countries, the end of the veto in the Security Council, an environmental agency, and a world court with powers of enforcement.

X. Optimism about the Human Prospect.  Finally, and perhaps most importantly, as members of the human community on this planet we need to nurture a sense of optimism about the human prospect. Although many problems may seem intractable, we have good reasons to believe that we can marshal our talent to solve them, and that by goodwill and dedication a better life will be attainable by more and more members of the human community. Planetary humanism holds forth great promises for humankind. We wish to cultivate a sense of wonder and excitement about the potential opportunities for realizing enriched lives for ourselves and for generations yet to be born.
