The Sounds of One Hand

Zen Master Hakuin Ekaku (1686-1769) was dedicated to help others attain insight, good behavior, generosity, and enlightenment. He was famous for his outstanding calligraphy and ink paintings. He composed many essays and sermons on Buddhism. 

One koan he frequently used to help his students was "What is the sound of one hand?" 

The Sounds of One Hand

Hakuin's cane struck the shoulders of his sleeping student.

The infant raised one hand and cried out.

He reached out and handed the child a book.

He slapped his hand on the table and said "No!"

The drummer's stick hit the snare drum.

He cut his hand with the sharp knife and cried out.

The soldier's severed hand rotted in the mud.

The pupil composed himself and then extended one hand forward.

The student slapped Hakuin's face.

The sound of silence in one hand.

The mother patted her hand on her daughter's shoulder

His hand made a fist.

He shook the hand of his rival.

He handed the beggar a $20.00 bill.

He dreamt that his one hand was stuck in the rocks.

He felt pain in his one hand thrust into the ice cold water.

He held the burning cigarette in his left hand.

The judge struck his gavel on the desk to return order in the court.

Her beautiful hand gently touched his face as he smiled.

The soccer players exchanged high-fives after one scored a goal.

He extended his hand to help up the old woman who had fallen down.

They lovers held hands and gently kissed.

He slurped the Mizo soup from the spoon in his right hand.

He clapped one hand on his knee to applaud the child singing.

The Dragon's claws scratched the Pearl that he grasped in his fist.

Hakuin's dragon cane clicked on the hardwood floor as he walked out.

Five Beneficial Methods for the Study of Tai Chi Chuan

"1.  Your study should be broad and diversified.  Do not limit yourself.  This principle (virtue) can be compared to your stance, which moves easily in many different directions.

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

On December 7th, 1941, the Japanese military attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.  2,043 military personnel and civilians were killed. and 1, 178 persons were injured. This event is just real history for me.

Today I watched numerous films, made in the 1940's, about World War II in the Pacific.  Turner Classic Movies featured a number of classic films about the War. 

On September 11, 2001, Islamic Terrorist's attacked the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon. nearly 3,000 people, mostly civilians, were killed; and thousands more injured.  I remember this event vividly.

Very sad days in the history of America.

Today, 12/7/2023, I would have returned from Cape Lookout State Park and through Tillamook on my way home from my yurt camping trip. I did not take this trip due to heavy rainfall, high winds, and flooding in this coastal area.  Highway 101 was closed due to flooding.  Many other local two lane country roads were flooded.

"The bay is protected from the open ocean by shoals and a 3 mi (5 km) sandbar called the Bayocean Peninsula. It is surrounded closely by the Coastal Range except at its southeast end, where the town of Tillamook sits near the mouths of the Kilchis, Wilson, Trask and Tillamook rivers, which flow quickly down from the surrounding timber-producing regions of the Coastal Range to converge at the bay. The short Miami River enters the north end of the bay. The small fishing village of Garibaldi sits near the cliffs opening of the bay in the ocean. The rivers that feed the bay are known for their prolific steelhead and salmon runs. The mixing of freshwater from the rivers with the ocean's saltwater makes the bay an estuary.

The name "Tillamook" is Coast Salish word meaning "Land of Many Waters", probably referring to the rivers that enter the bay. At the time of the arrival of Europeans, the area along the coast was inhabited by the Tillamook and other related Coast Salish tribes. Historians believe they entered the area around the year 1400 and Lewis and Clark estimated the population south of the Columbia River along the coast at approximately 2,200."

While the palace is extremely well appointed, the fields may be full of tares, and the granaries may be empty.
To dress grandly, to carry sharp swords, to eat and drink excessively, and to amass great wealth,
this I call stylish theft.
That it is not Tao is certain."

High Tides and Intense Storm for the Northwest Coast

I had to cancel my Yurt camping trip to Cape Lookout State Park, Oregon, scheduled from  December 5 to December 8, 2023. A major storm will bring a predicted 6 inches of rain to the coast, extensive flooding, high winds, and increasing high tides. They call it an "atmospheric river." 

I've been on the Oregon Coast before in these types of storms and you must stay indoors all the time or you will get soaked. Driving on the few twisting two-lane roads in the hilly terrain of the Oregon Coastal mountains is also quite dangerous in this kind of weather. Also, some roads by bays become closed because of flooding. Time to hunker down at our home in Vancouver during this coming heavy storm.

Commentary on the Muslim Threat by Sebastian Vilar Rodriguez

I normally don't post much in the way of political commentary, European politics, or on religious matters. Just gets people arguing and angry, with little resolution.

The post below by an author from Spain is decidedly anti-Islamic and pro-Jewish. The voter sentiment in many European countries has moved to the Right and is often anti-Islamic these days.  Our own 9/11/2001 attack by Islamic terrorists has not enamored us to Islamic perspectives.

My reading of history has convinced me that both Christians and Muslims are prone to authoritarianism, violence, and intolerance of non-believers. I don't trust either of these two organized religions. They both want to force others to live under their religious rules and customs, and establish theocratic governments.  Both devalue women and want to repress free thought. 

I do not favor the institutions and outlooks and supernatural beliefs of Islam, Christianity, or Judaism. I've not read their scriptures, listened to their sermons, or attended their churches since I was 19 years old.  I'm an agnostic humanist.

Since I am not a Christian, I don't have many associations with the Jesus myths at Yuletide. I was sent to Catholic schools from the 1st to the 12th grades, but have never had much affinity for that institutional religion ... confusing, boring, bossy, controlling, nonsensical, unbelievable.  I got straight A's in my Catholic religion classes in school because I could memorize rules and doctrines easily, and I was a clever and deceptive writer and speaker. I learned very early to never question priests, nuns, and brothers. I always kept my spiritual ideas to myself, kept a low profile, and pretended.  

ALL EUROPEAN LIFE DIED IN AUSCHWITZ

I walked down the street in Barcelona , and suddenly discovered a terrible truth - Europe died in Auschwitz ... We killed six million Jews and replaced them with 20 million Muslims. In Auschwitz we burned a culture, thought, creativity, talent. We destroyed the chosen people, truly chosen, because they produced great and wonderful people who changed the world.

The contribution of this people is felt in all areas of life:  science, art, international trade, and above all,  as the conscience of the world. These are the people we burned.

And under the pretense of tolerance, and because we wanted to prove to ourselves that we were cured of the disease of racism, we opened our gates to 20 million Muslims, who brought us stupidity and ignorance, religious extremism and lack of tolerance, crime and poverty, due to an unwillingness to work and support their families with pride.

They have blown up our trains and turned our beautiful Spanish cities into the third world, drowning in filth and crime. Shut up in the apartments they receive free from the government, they plan the murder and destruction of their naive hosts. And thus, in our misery, we have exchanged culture for fanatical hatred, creative skill for destructive skill, intelligence for backwardness and superstition.
We have exchanged the pursuit of peace of the Jews of Europe and their talent for a better future for their children, their determined clinging to life because life is holy, for those who pursue death, for people consumed by the desire for death for themselves and others, for our children and theirs.

What a terrible mistake was made by Europe.
The Global Islamic population is now approximately 1,200,000,000.  That is ONE BILLION TWO HUNDRED MILLION or 20% of the world's population.

The Jews are NOT promoting the brain washing of children in military training camps, or teaching them how to blow themselves up to cause the maximum deaths of Jews and other non Muslims. The Jews don't hijack planes, nor kill athletes at the Olympics, or blow themselves up in German restaurants. There is NOT one single Jew who has destroyed a church. There is NOT a single Jew who protests by killing people.

The Jews do not traffic slaves, nor do they have leaders calling for Jihad and death to ALL the Infidels.
Perhaps the world's Muslims should consider investing more in standard education and less in blaming the Jews for all their problems.

Muslims must ask 'what can they do for humankind' before they demand that humankind respects them.

Regardless of your feelings about the crisis between Israel and the Palestinians and Arab neighbors, even if you believe there is more culpability on Israel 's part, the following two sentences really say it all:

General Eisenhower warned us it is a matter of history that when he was the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead.

He did this because he said in words to this effect: Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses - because somewhere down the road of history someone will get up and say that this never happened.

Recently, the UK debated whether to remove The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offends' the Muslim population -  which claims it never occurred. It is not removed, as yet.  However, this is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it.

It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in Europe ended. Yang Taijiquan Long Form Third Section

For Tai Chi Chuan players: I often take a section of a long Taijiquan form and restudy and carefully practice only that section many times. I look up that section in books to learn more from master teachers. I also use instructional DVDs and UTube for sectional reviews. Smaller bites assists with better chewing and digestion.

I use the fine books by Fu Zhongwen, Li Deyin, T.T. Liang/Stuart Olson, and Gordon Muir for review. All have photographs or line illustrations of the movements and much commentary.
